Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (ShanghaiScienceandTechnologyMuseum) is the first major social and cultural project invested and built by Shanghai Municipal Government in the new century, with the theme of “Nature, People, Science and Technology” and the purpose of improving public science and technology literacy, it is an important science education and leisure tourism base. Exhibition Halls

Dome Theater

Fish Repository

Mammal Repository

There are currently 4,327 known species of living mammals in the world, and 550 known species of living mammals in China. The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum has 331 species of mammal specimens in its collection, with a total of 3,186 pieces. They account for 60.1% of the mammals in China and 7.6% of the mammals in the world. The mammal specimen collection of the Science and Technology Museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. The earliest specimen in the existing collection is from 1808, and there are 8 specimens of 8 species and 8 pieces over 100 years old. There are 197 specimens from the Asian Cultural Council and 123 specimens from the AURORA Museum. Among the mammal specimens in our collection, there are 9 positive models, 16 selected models and 3 paid models; 287 specimens of 46 species of national-level protected animals and 477 specimens of 52 species of national-level protected animals.

Geological Repository Collection

The geological depot of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum was built in 1980, but the collection of geological specimens can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. At present, there are 1253 known bird species in China, and there are 9407 bird specimens of 1,021 species in 86 families in the collection of the Science and Technology Museum, accounting for 81.48% of the number of bird species in the country. The collection of bird specimens in our museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. The earliest specimen in the existing collection is from 1870, and there are 140 specimens of 113 species over 100 years old. Among the bird specimens in our collection, the specimens in particular are the most characteristic, while there are 146 specimens of 29 species of birds protected at the national level and 1099 specimens of 140 species of animals protected at the second level, in addition, there are 38 species of bird nests affiliated with 110 birds, and 93 species of birds’ eggs with 802 eggs.

Amphibian Reptile Repository

Invertebrates are the most diverse, numerous and widely distributed group of animals in the world. There are more than 1.3 million known species in 19 phyla. The collection of invertebrate specimens in our museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. The existing specimens left behind by the AURORA Museum are 13 species and 54 pieces, while there are also a number of parasitic specimens made in 1933. The natural environment of the earth has been more and more seriously affected by the development of human society. After the industrial revolution, the rapid increase in productivity and population has led to a series of ecological and environmental problems. How much scientific knowledge has been accumulated for the realization of astronautics? What creations and inventions have been realized? What kind of hard training was carried out? What phenomena can we observe in the vastness of the universe? The exhibition area of Astronautics World is planned according to these questions with four areas: Astronautics Knowledge Area, Astronautics Training Experience Area, Astronautics Achievement Display Area and Space Theatre. The purpose is to let visitors understand and know these questions in a variety of experiential activities.

Space Theater

The Space Theater (Digistar3) is the first multimedia dome theater in China that uses a combination of video splicing, image processing, audience interaction, and computer integration technologies. 6 video projectors are used in the Digistar3 system, with a lighting power of 4,800 watts. The Digistar3 system also has a great video system with powerful subwoofers and distributed speakers hanging behind the dome, allowing stereo digital sound to enter the theater through the dome.

The entire theater has 69 seats with a 23-degree tilt, so the audience is almost lying down to watch the movie. The most novel thing is that there is a control button on the armrest of each seat, and the audience can control the development of the movie plot by this button, which achieves the realm of “the picture moves with the person and the person thinks with the picture”. Being in it, you will have the feeling of being there, feeling the excitement and joy of space adventure, and you will completely forget that it is just a movie.

This theater is an important project of the second phase of our museum, and is now officially open to the public.

Explorer’s Gallery

The “Explorers’ Gallery” introduces scientists who have left immortal achievements in human history and their deeds. We focus on 20 scientists who have changed the world we perceive and live in over the past 3,000 years.

On the one hand, we emphasize the key figures who have been epoch-making in the advancement of science and civilization, and on the other hand, we take into account the ancient, modern, Chinese and foreign, the long history and the richness of scientific research.

Science Cinema

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Science Cinema has four distinctive theaters with different styles: IMAX stereo giant screen theater, IWERKS four-dimensional theater, IMAX dome theater, space digital theater. These four theaters are distributed in the exhibition area of the Science and Technology Museum, forming the largest science cinema in Asia. The cinema has a total of 846 seats, with a total of 42 daily screenings and a daily capacity of 8,863 visitors.

In the IMAX stereo giant screen theater, the audience will be shocked by the huge image and the three-dimensional touch, which is one of the most advanced theaters in the world and the first operating stereo giant screen theater in mainland China.

In IWERKS four-dimensional theater, the audience can experience the wonder of Disney, the impact of the fourth dimension requires the audience to endure the physical and mental test.

In the IMAX dome theater, the audience will be enveloped in a huge sphere, back and forth, left and right moving images, 30-degree tilt recliner, you will have the illusion of suspended in the air, so that you are both afraid and can not close your eyes.

In the space digital cinema, the audience will be completely free from the constraints of the film, like a game by the audience to master the development of the film plot, which may be the future direction of film development. This is the first multimedia dome theater with digital technology in China at present.
