About Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is an important science education base and leisure tourism base in Shanghai. The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum project covers an area of more than 68,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 98,000 square meters. The exhibition content consists of five main pavilions and temporary pavilions, including the Pavilion of Heaven and Earth, the Pavilion of Life, the Pavilion of Wisdom, the Pavilion of Creation, and the Pavilion of the Future, with a total investment of 1.755 billion RMB. Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (ShanghaiScienceandTechnologyMuseum) is the first major social and cultural project invested and built by Shanghai Municipal Government in the new century, with the theme of “Nature, People, Science and Technology” and the purpose of improving public science and technology literacy, it is an important science education and leisure tourism base. It is located in the administrative and cultural center of Huamu, west of Century Square and south of Century Park, where the 2001 APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting was held.

Exhibition Halls
The first phase of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is open to the public in six exhibition areas and one branch: the Crust Exploration Zone, where visitors can experience various geological changes; the Biology Zone, which shows the rainforest topography, tropical plants and wonderful species, and demonstrates the wonders of life; the Children’s Science and Technology Park, where children observe the outside world and participate in practical activities in science and technology; the Light of Wisdom Zone, which reveals the laws of nature and demonstrates a variety of scientific phenomena; and the Science and Technology Zone, which emphasizes The Cradle of Designers exhibit, which emphasizes that “good ideas” are the source of innovation; the Audiovisual Paradise exhibit, which showcases modern information and film technology; and the Nature Museum, which displays more than 3,000 precious specimens of humans, animals and paleontology and tells the legend of life. Dome Theater

Among the many categories in the collection of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, animals have the most characteristic amphibian reptiles, with amphibian collection accounting for 46.6% of the country and reptiles accounting for 56.3% of the country; plants are more complete with higher plants and lichens, and paleontological ones have the most characteristic specimens of Shanwang fossil group, Holocene vertebrate subfossil specimens from Shanghai area and fossil mammal specimens from Linqu, Shandong Province and bird specimens from Liaoxi respectively.
Fish Repository
The fish specimen collection of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum, founded in 1868, and the Asian Cultural Society, built in 1

Collection of seawater fish is the most famous, accounting for about 80% of the entire fish collection, especially the most characteristic of Hainan Xisha. Among the fish specimens in the collection, there are 9 specimens of one type; 1300 specimens of 5 types of rare specimens at the national level and 2 types; 100 specimens of 30 types of new domestic records; and 21 specimens of 8 types from abroad. The more influential modern Chinese ichthyological literature has cited the specimens of the Museum.
Mammal Repository
There are currently 4,327 known species of living mammals in the world, and 550 known species of living mammals in China. The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum has 331 species of mammal specimens in its collection, with a total of 3,186 pieces. They account for 60.1% of the mammals in China and 7.6% of the mammals in the world. The mammal specimen collection of the Science and Technology Museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. The earliest specimen in the existing collection is from 1808, and there are 8 specimens of 8 species and 8 pieces over 100 years old. There are 197 specimens from the Asian Cultural Council and 123 specimens from the AURORA Museum. Among the mammal specimens in our collection, there are 9 positive models, 16 selected models and 3 paid models; 287 specimens of 46 species of national-level protected animals and 477 specimens of 52 species of national-level protected animals.
Geological Repository Collection
The geological depot of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum was built in 1980, but the collection of geological specimens can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. At present, our museum has 4807 pieces of geological specimens, which are taken from Shanghai and other places in China, and are divided into minerals, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum

Paleontological Repository
The fossil specimen collection of the Science and Technology Museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874, which to date collects more than 100 specimens left by the AURORA Museum. The current fossil collection amounts to 6,676 pieces, covering the main categories of animal and plant fossils, among which 160 specimens of the Shanwang Fossil Group, 23 specimens of Holocene vertebrate subfossils from the Shanghai area, and four specimens of mammalian fossils and four specimens of birds from Linqu, Shandong Province, respectively, are the most distinctive. The number of type specimens in the collection is 1727, mainly invertebrate fossil specimens from the Mesozoic of Guizhou and fossil specimens of Paleozoic and Cenozoic gastropods, along with one vertebrate fossil. The more influential modern Chinese paleontological literature has cited specimens from this museum.

The insect and mite specimens in the Science and Technology Museum total 27,880 specimens of 848 species in 13 orders and 86 families. The specimen collection can be traced back to 1868 when the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
The AURORA Museum, founded in 1868, and the Asian Cultural Society, founded in 1874, have 2,760 specimens and 219 ecological specimens from the AURORA Museum. Among the insect specimens in the collection, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera are the most abundant. Besides, there are 116 specimens of 23 species of mite models, including 28 positive models, 84 secondary models and 4 matching models, 1 species of national-level protected animal specimens and 4 species of second-level protected animal specimens.
Bird Repository
At present, there are 1253 known bird species in China, and there are 9407 bird specimens of 1,021 species in 86 families in the collection of the Science and Technology Museum, accounting for 81.48% of the number of bird species in the country. The collection of bird specimens in our museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. The earliest specimen in the existing collection is from 1870, and there are 140 specimens of 113 species over 100 years old. Among the bird specimens in our collection, the specimens in particular are the most characteristic, while there are 146 specimens of 29 species of birds protected at the national level and 1099 specimens of 140 species of animals protected at the second level, in addition, there are 38 species of bird nests affiliated with 110 birds, and 93 species of birds’ eggs with 802 eggs.
Amphibian Reptile Repository
The total number of amphibian and reptile specimens in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is 8524, including 140 species of amphibians (51[dried] 3885[dipped]) 3936, and 218 species of reptiles (396[dried] 4110[dipped]) 4506, accounting for 46.6% and 56.3% of amphibians and reptiles in China respectively; the Museum has 54 species of amphibian specimens endemic to China, accounting for There are 54 species of Chinese endemic amphibians, accounting for 30.8% of Chinese endemic species, and 37 species of reptiles, accounting for 27.8% of Chinese endemic reptiles. Invertebrate Repository
Invertebrates are the most diverse, numerous and widely distributed group of animals in the world. There are more than 1.3 million known species in 19 phyla. The collection of invertebrate specimens in our museum can be traced back to the AURORA Museum founded in 1868 and the Asian Cultural Society built in 1874. The existing specimens left behind by the AURORA Museum are 13 species and 54 pieces, while there are also a number of parasitic specimens made in 1933. BioVision

Mystery of the Earth’s Crust
The Crustal Mystery exhibit demonstrates that our Earth is a “dynamic tectonic body” that is always in motion and has a law of its own development and evolution through a combination of simulated scenes, interactive exhibits/exhibits, specimens, films, and multimedia. Light of Wisdom
The Light of Wisdom exhibit uses a large number of interactive exhibits as the main display means to demonstrate typical phenomena in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and other disciplines, reveal their basic laws and principles, cultivate visitors’ hands-on skills, understand the scientific method and scientific thinking, as well as the tireless exploration spirit of scientists. The whole exhibition area is based on the idea of “observe natural phenomena → organize and analyze typical phenomena → understand the laws of nature”, with a prologue, a central activity area and an interactive exhibit area, with a display area of about 1800 square meters (including the mezzanine).
Designer’s Cradle
The theme of the Designer’s Cradle display is computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), with a display area of 800㎡. Here, visitors get hands-on with some simple design and manufacturing activities and experience some basic technologies of modern design and advanced manufacturing, including (CAD/CAM), laser burning technology, rapid prototyping technology, etc. The Cradle of Designers exhibition area is to let visitors experience that there is design everywhere in life and everyone can be a designer through their own personal participation. The exhibition area is set up with design manufacturing area, visitor design area, design masterpiece area, mainly with gift carving station, 3D head scanning and production, flexible assembly line, business card greeting card production station, MTV production station, CAD classroom, design gallery and other exhibits.
Four-dimensional Cinema
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Four Dimensional Cinema is a Disney concept cinema with a capacity of 56 audiences, which is a combination of three-dimensional film and one-dimensional environmental effects. Home of the Earth
The natural environment of the earth has been more and more seriously affected by the development of human society. After the industrial revolution, the rapid increase in productivity and population has led to a series of ecological and environmental problems. Sustainable development has aroused the common concern of all mankind. So, how have human activities in recent years affected the sustainable development of the earth? What actions have been taken for sustainable development? What are the main environmental knowledge and technologies that the public needs to focus on for sustainable development? The Earth Home exhibit will answer these questions through three sections: ecological disasters, changes in the Suzhou River, and environmental knowledge.

Robot World

How much scientific knowledge has been accumulated for the realization of astronautics? What creations and inventions have been realized? What kind of hard training was carried out? What phenomena can we observe in the vastness of the universe? The exhibition area of Astronautics World is planned according to these questions with four areas: Astronautics Knowledge Area, Astronautics Training Experience Area, Astronautics Achievement Display Area and Space Theatre. The purpose is to let visitors understand and know these questions in a variety of experiential activities.
Space Theater
The Space Theater (Digistar3) is the first multimedia dome theater in China that uses a combination of video splicing, image processing, audience interaction, and computer integration technologies. 6 video projectors are used in the Digistar3 system, with a lighting power of 4,800 watts. The Digistar3 system also has a great video system with powerful subwoofers and distributed speakers hanging behind the dome, allowing stereo digital sound to enter the theater through the dome.
The entire theater has 69 seats with a 23-degree tilt, so the audience is almost lying down to watch the movie. The most novel thing is that there is a control button on the armrest of each seat, and the audience can control the development of the movie plot by this button, which achieves the realm of “the picture moves with the person and the person thinks with the picture”. Being in it, you will have the feeling of being there, feeling the excitement and joy of space adventure, and you will completely forget that it is just a movie.
This theater is an important project of the second phase of our museum, and is now officially open to the public.
Explorer’s Gallery
The “Explorers’ Gallery” introduces scientists who have left immortal achievements in human history and their deeds. We focus on 20 scientists who have changed the world we perceive and live in over the past 3,000 years.
On the one hand, we emphasize the key figures who have been epoch-making in the advancement of science and civilization, and on the other hand, we take into account the ancient, modern, Chinese and foreign, the long history and the richness of scientific research.
Science Cinema
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Science Cinema has four distinctive theaters with different styles: IMAX stereo giant screen theater, IWERKS four-dimensional theater, IMAX dome theater, space digital theater. These four theaters are distributed in the exhibition area of the Science and Technology Museum, forming the largest science cinema in Asia. The cinema has a total of 846 seats, with a total of 42 daily screenings and a daily capacity of 8,863 visitors.
In the IMAX stereo giant screen theater, the audience will be shocked by the huge image and the three-dimensional touch, which is one of the most advanced theaters in the world and the first operating stereo giant screen theater in mainland China.
In IWERKS four-dimensional theater, the audience can experience the wonder of Disney, the impact of the fourth dimension requires the audience to endure the physical and mental test.
In the IMAX dome theater, the audience will be enveloped in a huge sphere, back and forth, left and right moving images, 30-degree tilt recliner, you will have the illusion of suspended in the air, so that you are both afraid and can not close your eyes.
In the space digital cinema, the audience will be completely free from the constraints of the film, like a game by the audience to master the development of the film plot, which may be the future direction of film development. This is the first multimedia dome theater with digital technology in China at present.
