What is Peak Tram?
Riding the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak, one of Hong Kong’s most iconic tourist attractions, is an unforgettable experience. The Peak Tram, one of the earliest motorized public transportation systems, has been in operation for over 100 years. It follows the tracks along the slope of the mountain, traveling from an elevation of 92 feet (28 meters) to 1,300 feet (396 meters) in seven minutes. It can carry 120 passengers at a time, with seating for 95 and standing room for 25.
The Peak Tram passes six stations in sequence: Garden Road, Kennedy Road, McDonnell Road, May Road, Barker Road, and The Peak. The lower terminus is on Garden Road at Central and the upper terminus is on the third floor of the Peak Tower on the hillside.
Directions to the Peak Tram
Take the 15C bus from Piers or City Hall to the streetcar terminus. If you are in the city center, you will need to take the bus to the Lower Peak Tram terminus. This route is very direct and has only two stops. You must pay in cash or scan your Octopus card. The fare is HK$4.2 per adult. Please have the exact fare ready as the driver will not give change.
Purchase an Octopus card at a 7-Eleven in Hong Kong for HK$150. This price is current as of 14.11.18. On Hong Kong buses and streetcars, scan this card instead of buying a ticket.
There is no fixed timetable for these buses, but they arrive approximately every 15 minutes between 7 am and midnight.
If you are already at or near the Lower Peak Tram terminus, skip this step.
Children and seniors tickets are half price.
Get off at the Garden Road stop, where bus 15C stops right next to the Lower Peak Tram terminus. This is a permanent bus stop, so there is no need to signal the driver; the bus will arrive at the stop in about 15 minutes, but there may be some delays due to traffic.
Purchase a streetcar ticket at the tram terminus. Tickets are HK$45 for an adult round-trip ticket, and the shortest lines are on weekdays until mid-morning. Weekends and holidays are very crowded with tourists, so be prepared for long lines at the ticket booth if you visit on these days.
Tickets for children and seniors are half price. These prices are current as of 14.11.18.
If you have an Octopus card, please use this instead of a ticket. You will not have to wait in line at the ticket office.
If you want to ride the Peak Tram, you must first reserve your ticket!
If you have a discount coupon, you can book online and purchase tickets at a discounted price.
TIPS
It may take some time to purchase tickets. To save time and energy, avoid weekends and holidays.
If you purchase a combo ticket that includes Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, you can take the streetcar from Express Access and save a lot of time.
The streetcar does not turn around when it arrives at the Peak, but goes backwards and downhill. Some may find this scary. You can purchase a one-way ticket to the Peak Tower and take bus #15 (NWFB) or #15B down.
