About Shanghai’s Nanjing Road

Shanghai’s Nanjing Road is the busiest and most prosperous commercial street in Shanghai, and is known as the “First Street of Chinese Commerce”. With hundreds of modern commercial buildings, long-established Chinese stores and specialty stores, Nanjing Road has become the largest distribution center for retail goods and commercial information in China, and the daily flow of people to Nanjing Road reaches millions of people.

At night, the entire East Nanjing Road is lit up in a variety of colors. In 1999, Nanjing Road was transformed into China’s first all-weather pedestrian street, with its beautiful buildings, stores, bustling markets and glorious night scenery.

The 1,033-meter-long Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is planned to run from Henan Zhong Road to Xizang Zhong Road in an asymmetrical design. On the north side of the straight Nanjing Road, there is a “golden belt” that always runs through the whole street, in which various flower beds and bus shelters are concentrated, and under the sunset, the “golden belt” is like a rich and colorful motion picture. At the same time, the commercial pattern of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street has also changed, and the phenomenon of “a thousand stores” has become history.

One hundred, Hualian and New World on the pedestrian street continue to retain their characteristics of comprehensive department stores, while the rest of the buildings are developing into professional commercial buildings with “one store and one product”. At the same time, the pedestrian street has greatly increased the components of catering, leisure and entertainment, making Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street develop into a pattern of “elegant in the eastern section, professional in the middle section and prosperous in the western section”.
